It is a question of balance...and we all balance it a bit differently...that is why some are stable and healthy and others are neurotic and unhinged....
Of course we value our most precious things/relationships...and in holding them dear...there is an inherent fear of loss....which sometimes does occur...calling upon us to cope...some are able to and some are not...leading them to all sorts of maladaptive behaviors in feeble, inept attempts to cope...
There is the matter of Faith...that there is a Master Plan in which our losses ultimately serve some higher purpose and eventually better us...and also the Faith that when something is lost...something takes its place....
It is important to know also, that if we view ourselves as victims...we are already lost....
And what is it that gives our live meaning?....Balancing the triad of 1) earning, achieving, enjoying and savoring the things we hold dear 2) the good feelings of competence and strength that come when we succeed in our struggle to cope and 3) the divine experience we have when we create and sustain a living Faith...

For me, I believe that there would not be much to one’s life if it is consumed by a constant fear of loss. Loss is simply a part of life; and to cling so desperately onto the things within it will simply result in one not being able to live one’s life to the fullest, or even not really living at all. Loss is simply an inevitable fact that one would be wise to steel and prepare oneself for; an eventuality that is pointless to delude against.
Simply live. And be thankful for all the things one has been privileged to hold and behold, no matter how temporary. It is inevitable that we would lose things dear to us along the way. And when that happens, it is alright to lament the loss all we may to achieve appropriate and healthy closure; but do not let the loss consume us that we forget to continue on with the journey still long ahead.
We always have the choice between becoming a victim or a survivor of circumstances. It is up to us if we would let circumstances control our happiness in life…
…or otherwise.
Great question. Have yourself a good day, Sir, and welcome back!.

When it comes to material possessions - beyond the basic necessities - we can be victims of what we fear to lose, because we will spend our precious time and energy chasing money that we end up losing so much more in life that is important (time with family and friends, lazy hours spent in happy contemplation, sleep even). Life should be lived in balance so it can have meaning for all of us. The part relating to our reputations and positions is particularly insidious and is not a superficial question. If you find you are forced to take a position that is so important to you, in order to help other people and in order to be able to live with yourself, sometimes your whole life can be destroyed or put in great jeopardy, and so can the lives of those close to you. This is particularly true for political prisoners and whistle-blowers. On the other hand if you do what is right and "stick to your guns", life can often reward you with significant gains for your cause.

I believe many people are to their possessions.. There isn't a thing I own that can't be replaced! I believe that because I pretty much got everything I wanted as a child, and I didnt appreciate the things that I had so they weren't treated with care...I noticed it worse in my kids when they were pretty young..we have started making them earn money and we don't buy them very much anymore! Wisdom from my humility!
If I am in fear of losing anything its my family...and I believe that it does add meaning and makes them so special to me!

I understand your point, but we are truly not 'victims' to anything other than our own struggles to 'master' ourselves in this dense, heavy, physical plane.
I believe that it is the synthesis with the energy that 'drives' us, and the animal, mammalian DNA that we use to produce these monkey suits, that causes an aberrant behavioural pattern which is characteristic of neither who we really are, nor the animals that exist here. We have fear, big-time, and we have these big brains. The combination of the two produces the illusion of the 'negative'.
Thus we build up all sorts of fears, mostly of not having enough of something, love, stuff, food, space, in fact you name it and we have manifested the fear of insufficiency of it.
No, we are the victims of nothing, and no-one, other than our dumb-*ss big brains. :-)))

good question.....I don't feel qualified to answer...I wrote and rewrote an answer a few times...and I can't really give a satisfying reply...the only thing I can say is not all loss is bad..some things are good to lose so you can see what is really important. It is the important things that we suffer from when lost...but even then the pain may teach us something we could not learn other wise....and maybe the important things don't really get lost.
