Every single VW Beatle ever made had that. It was close to the rear-mounted engine, made more room under the (rear) hood, and was not out in the cold so starting was marginally easier during the Winter.

This last could be the reason, but if so, why don't ALL cars have an inside battery.
There is a power loss due to a voltage drop when the wiring must run through most of the car to get to the starter in front.

Turbo-charged engine compartments tend to be hotter and so the battery ages faster there.

I own a `classic car`, it is a 1965 hand built M.G. Midget with a `soft` top ( a hood than can be put down in good weather) It has a battery under the back seat. I used to have a great time allowing people to look under the bonnet, and wait for them to yell " You haven`t got a battery" !

I knew someone that had a Riviera that had that, and i was never sure quite why that was. I thought that it was to relocate the battery because of cramped room under the hood - The Riviera had a factory installed Turbo charger so i thought that might have something to do with it.

Sorry, I do not own one...I'm just shocked that they make other cars this way!! The only car I've ever seen with the battery under the backseat was an old VW Beetle......and it started on fire!!!! :(

We haven't a car. If going far travel by taxi, bus or train. Otherwise locally go by bicycle.
