The toxin that puffers produce is actually made by a bacterium that's found in their wild diet. So if the puffer you have was wild caught, it may still have the toxin (unlike captive bred puffers, or those that have been in captivity for a while). But for your other fish to have been affected by the poison, it would have had to bitten the puffer to relaease the poison (it's in their skin to some degree, but mostly in their internal organs).

It's more likely that your puffer attacked the other fish. Puffers, even the little ones are aggressive fish and territorial. They really should be kept in tank by themselves and not put with other fish.

I have seen puffers in community tanks in a lot of pet shops but I have always kept them in a seperate brackish tank. I've actually gotten them to breed in this set-up one time but they died before the babies hatched. I have many books on them and they say it is not something that has been seen before so I don't know if the babies should have been seperated or not. Noone seems to know what relationship a parent has with these babies. As for them being poisonous I really haven't hears it but they are rather aggressive with fin nippers. They are rather unique fish and are sort of an unknown as far as the books I have on them. I doubt that the puffer was the cause of your loss but it is possible!

That would be ok for a few months, then you might want to consider a 10 gallon, 5g is fine but just think about it, would you like to live in a fridge your entire life? Dwarf Puffers aren't happy unless they have some space to play and move around. Good luck!!

yeah puffers look so innocent and cute at the fish store but wreak havock on all other fish in your tank when you get them home. They seem so pudgy and harmless but are actually pretty quick and nibble the fins off of all other fish. even if they are well fed they will do this. Get rid of them.

puffers can be quite aggressive, even with tankmates several times their size. some puffers are quite territorial. they have very sharp beaks that they like to use on snails, but can use on fish as well.

No, they are not poisonous, but they are very aggressive fish. They should usually be kept on their own only, they don't get along with most fish. Check the following link on how to care for dwarf puffers:
