NO!! Never give a baby water unless otherwise directed by his pediatrician. It's a big choking hazard and it's not necessary. Formula or breastmilk only.

A week old and breast-fed babies usually does not need much water.
If your baby is formula-fed, he might occacionally need some water, in a way to prevent constipation.
How would you know is to observe his stools. If his stools are getting more 'solid', you may want to feed him some water.
Always give babies boiled water that has been cooled to around the same temperature of the formula milk you feed him. Never give babies water or formula milk that's 'too cold' or he might get wind in his stomach and lead to colic.
If you baby is on a 3-hours feeding routine, feed water at around 1.5-hours after feeding.
In case if you're worried about choking, as water flows out more quickly then milk -
1. get a teat with a 'Y' cut
2. spoon feed the water one drop at a time
There's no exactly 'how much' water you should feed you baby, stop feeding when baby stops.
Hope my experience in dealing with my 6-years old and 2 years 7 months old girls helps you =)

There is no reason to feed a baby water until they start taking solid foods after 6 months old or when you start cereal if your doctor recommends it at 3 months. They get enough nutrients from breast milk or formula.

A baby gets all the hydration they need from breast milk or formula. Unless there is illness or it is recommended by your doctor, there is no reason to give water or any other additional fluid before about 6 months or around when they start on solid food.

Giving your baby water will not hurt him, necessarily, but he doesn't need it. Right now the only thing he needs is breast milk (or formula if you are going that route.) That will hydrate him plenty, and giving him water will only fill his tiny tummy up, taking up the precious little space there is for milk. Worst case scenario, water could hold off a starving, screaming baby, but I'd hold off for a while longer.

Babies don't need water if they are on breast milk or formula, they will get all the water they need there. They can have water as a beverage after the first year, in a sippy cup or bottle, after they've had their milk or formula. Water is better than juice as a beverage, but NOT in the first year when nutrition is paramount.

Your baby only needs breastmilk (or formula if that is your choice) until he is 6 months old. Don't worry about feeding him water till then.

Giving your baby boy water will not hurt him. He need's 1 to 2 oz's after a feeding, to wash off the milk from the tongue. Or he will get THRUSH, sores on the tongue and cheeks...VERY PAINFUL forBABY'S

Why would you think a baby needs water in the first place?

I asked my pediatrician this yesterday @ my daughters two month check up. She'd strain pretty bad when she had a BM and he recommended water. I always thought they weren't supposed to have it until much later but apparently it helps w/ constipation. If your baby doesn't have this problem then there'd be no reason really to give him water (at least according to my pediatrician).
