Take a glass of water and add plenty of salt. Take a sip and gargle your mouth with it. Your phlegm should go away instantly. If not, keep doing it because it will happen sooner or later. You don't need drugs for this. I gargle my mouth with salt water whenever I have an excess amount of phlegm and it always works for me. Get well soon.

Unfortunately, your lungs drain UP, not down, so it's a lot harder to drain than sinuses. Also, all those teeny-weeny little alveoli (sp?), the sacs in your lungs, are congested, so it's going to take a long time no matter what.
I suggest you AVOID the following:
Ice Cream
Milk
Orange juice and all fruit juice
Iced drinks
Smoothies
Dairy products of all kinds
Cold foods and drinks of all kinds, if you can
You're doing the right thing by drinking lots of tea and resting. Drink a lot of water at room temperature. Take an OTC expectorant (it will help you cough stuff up faster). And just be patient.

In addition to all these remedies, let's look at cause: Chronic excess mucous is a kapha imbalance condition in Ayurveda and usually an excess of cold and wet conditions in TCM. It is also a huge sign that a) your internal fire is not running hot enough, b) that you're pretty septic and need to clean up your body and your diet, and STOP putting things that you're allergic to and that are excessively mucous-forming for your condition/constitution. It's like a motor that's not burning clean, b/c of crap gas, and crappy oil being put into it. Try an elimination diet where you stop eating ALL dairy (that's usually the biggest offender...), all white flour, all eggs and all meats for a good six months to a year. Eliminate all artificial chemicals, dyes and additives. Eliminate all fast foods. If you find you absolutely MUST eat dairy, limit it to cultured foods like plain yogurt, kefir and kefir or yogurt cheese and ghee. Ice cream, pizza, whipped cream, cream of any kind, in fact, whole milk, cheeses--all these are no longer food choices for you. Same with these other foods on the list. So essentially, you're going to go veg for the next 6 months to a year, b/c only by eliminating foods completely from your diet, can you actually come to see the effects they have on you and your body. You'll be amazed. If you're a person who absolutely has to have animal food in your diet, choose fish, seafood, and organic eggs if you must. Later, you can try some organic poultry, but only if it's organic, and only if you hate fish and seafood. You should find that at the end of this regime, you've lost quite a bit of weight, your allergies have cleared up or disappeared and that you don't get those nasty, creamy colds nearly as often. Add yoga and a dance regime to your lifestyle, too, and you'll be AMAZED. I would also suggest some homeopathic Pulsatilla for those ripe, creamy, mucousy colds. There are many other possible remedies to help you as well, and I would need a complete list of your symptoms in order to properly help you and to be sure that what I am recommending is the correct remedy for your constitution. Finally, do not look at colds as a hassle caused by outside "infecting agents" like viruses and bacteria, so much as a) your body going through a NECESSARY discharge to get rid of all the crap it contains and b) a vital and beneficial process NOT to be suppressed. Think about what that crap becomes if it is NOT discharged by the body every once in awhile. Far better out, than in...Your body is wise. Trust it to know more than you do, and don't try to suppress its symptoms, just b/c they are uncomfortable, or you don't like them. Huge clue to change what you're doing...so wake up, mate!

Steam your face with some Vick's in the water. Take any over-the-counter med with Guifenisin (sp?) in it (it will help you purge your congestion). Drop warm salt water into each nostril and spit it out, several times a day. Finally, apply moist heat to your face and forehead (wash clothes soaked in hot water). Hope you feel better.

Muconex, def works! Also, you need to drink LOTS of water (don't drink juice or anything with sugar in it), take extra vitamin c, rest a lot (you hear that a lot but its so true), and dont be around smoke or allergens...those are the MAIN causes of sinus/allergy/phlem problems!

Think outside the box. OTC drugs are not the answer. Think natural medicine. There are a whole host of natural, organic, theraputic grade essential oils that would help you to feel better. Lavender and lemon are two.
Your body is trying to expel the mucus so don't try to stop it by using OTC drugs.

You need to cough that junk up. Otherwise, it could eventually choke you to death.
