As the old cliche says..."There is fungus amongus...!"
That odour is micro-organisms doing their thing and will soon attach to those wearing the shoes...mold and mildew...
To begin with, leave the closet door open as much as possible so that the air may circulate inside...
The first thing you must do is to sprinkle some athletes' foot powder in the shoes and do so often when returning them to the closet... Don't ever place wet shoes in the closet either as the moisture promotes organism growth...
Then it would be best to place a bottle of liquid Air-Wick dis-infectant in the closet where it will not be tipped over and spilled. That will last several weeks and should be replaced when needed...
You do not want to change the odour with cedar or air fresheners...you want to eliminate the problem instead... If you do want a refreshing scent, Air-Wick has a pine scent disinfectant also...

If the clothes started to smell nasty, use fabric freshener on them.. it would definitely smell so much better.
If the floor of your closet is carpet, it might be the reason it stinks.. it might be soiled or molded or whatever.. use a carpet cleaner and put a carpet powder freshener leave it there for like 15 mins and vacuum it up. Good luck

Paint is way to go. A water base paint. That'll cover the smell a great deal since it's surly permeated in the walls. Then so your clothes don't smell like paint (water base isn't too bad) use a couple car fresheners for a time.

Go to the home store and purchase cedar sticks. While your there, buy some shoe boxes that are made of plastic and will neatly organize all of your shoes. These boxes are see-through so you can quickly find what you want to wear. The Container Store has all these items.

Put baking soda in the shoes overnight and sprinkle baking soda all over the floor. The next day, empty the shoes and vaccum the floor. If that doesn't work try Fabreze.

Wash everything you can with pine soap, or lysol, rinse well, rinse again. Then, using fresh rinse water, drop in some vinegar, rinse again, more rinse water , but this time add baking soda, and rinse again. This should absorb the odors and help to prevent their returning. Also, put powder in the bottom of your shoes, and use shoe pads, or don't put bare feet into shoes.

I had the comparable difficulty with my roommate different than he smelled like low-value cigarettes (ugh). First you are able to desire to discover the basis of the scent, if its your mattress, take each and all the sheets comforter and each thing else. Take all your linens and wash them with deodorizing detergent. you apart from mght ought to hire a carpet cleansing provider. If none of that works that's particularly helpful to throw out the mattress sheets and purchase new ones. good success

You can put Cedar wood in your closet. Maybe there's mold in that closet which might be making it smell that way. Cedar protects against mold, moths, bugs, and odor...you can pick it up at Wal-Mart...they sell it in these nifty little packages that you can simply place in your closet, or chest of drawers! It works!
