I was at the mall recently and they have the Christmas trees up and lit along with the gifts for Christmas on display! The autumn leaves haven't even fallen yet?

called merchandising.by them. called stupidity by me. we are a capitalist country. it is our chance to buy more Chinese made toys for our kids. it would save a lot of effort if they just left them up all year. why not, they are tasking away the real meaning of Christmas. oh, and i will NOT accept a happy holiday.but i will accept and give a merry christmas. THAT i will NOT change for anyone.

From what I hear the retail markets are hurting. Some have taken losses in the last month or so. There is talk that they will not be hiring as much Seasonal workers this year.
With the higher price for gas, the Mortgage problems, the recalls on childrens toys due to the lead problems, and many people losing their jobs, plus the War, many people are cutting back on spending.
A lot of stores have an overstock of Summer clothing, that did not sell and have had to put a lot on sale and take a loss. And retail sales are down. It just seems the norm that they would want to get the jump on Christmas sales, as soon as they can.
I think people are running scared and holding back on buying. WIll I have a house, job, is a queston many are asking. They are just trying to live day to day, and can't afford to pay for the extras.
It is becoming a two class society, the RICH and the POOR, there seems to be less and less of the MIDDLE Class citizen. But they just keep trying to draw you in and the Credit card companies, just want you to spend your money, so you will be even more in debt.

My husband mentioned that he was in a store the other day
and they had their Christmas wrapping and such out. I think
it was in one of the drug stores. Usually they don't start until
after Halloween anyway. I remember when I last worked, we
were going thru stuff to put out for Christmas decorations on the first of November. Usually they start with the decorations, so people can start buying those special ornaments for the season ahead. And also the Christmas card inventory goes out as well. Then in mid November they start with the gift buying ads already. It's that almighty dollar they're after of course.
They figure you'll start shopping early and keep coming back
for a longer period if they start the holiday buying season earlier. It's called, "Extended Holiday Shopping", when you're in the biz.

These merchants spoil it for us consumers and those that look forward to Christmas but in its proper sequence. I agree with you, the autumn leaves are still falling. Can they at least wait till after Thanksgiving? The merchants erode the Christmas spirit. Period. Or at least I see it that way. Halloween is yet to arrive and they're working on Christmas. I am greatful that they haven't found a way to spoil Thanksgiving.

Yes. It gets earlier every year! Scary, especially as it looks like I'm going to be alone this Christmas. but it is just the same old marketing ploy. the sooner the people buy Christmas goodies, the quicker the companies can put the money into their Banks and earn interest.

My friend in Florida informed in mid september that some of the stores had back to school stuff, hallowe'en and some christmas shopping stuff.

People do start earlier and earlier and with the looney being more than the Greenback alot of Canadians are heading for the border to christmas shop.

Daisymae - this is called marketing or capitalism - you choose! Anyway, I'm with you and I refuse to enter a retail establishment at this time of year! The music drives me crazy! People are pushy and rude, and everyone is over-looking the true meaning of the holiday! (hint: it's not about the money). Personally I shop on line. No crowds, no holiday music and no Christmas trees!!!!!!!! Yay! CJ

In SEPTEMBER, Dollar Tree was putting out Christmas stuff! I asked the clerk where I could find some Valentine party decorations. She just gave me a dirty look and walked away. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
NO sense of humor!
Also, every year Virginia Beach has the boardwalk decorated with moving lights ... "HOLIDAY LIGHT SHOW'' and you can drive your car/van through/by them. They are ALREADY advertising them on the side of the highway!
I can remember when Christmas decorations didn't go on sale until after Thanksgiving!
Poor ATHEISTS and ANTI-CHRISTIANS must be going NUTS now! Oh, wait, they celebrate WINTER HOLIDAYS by putting up WINTER HOLIDAY TREES and give WINTER HOLIDAY GIFTS!
gag , puke

And just watch...two days after Christmas they'll have the marked down holiday stuff on one side of the aisle, and the new Valentines stuff on the other!!

Right now in one of our stores you can by things for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.....just take your pick!

It's earlier and earlier each year.....I worked retail and believe me you were totally burnt out on the holidays long before they ever got here. I do have to admit this is the first time I've seen them decorating the Christmas trees at the same time they're putting out Halloween candy. We used to work it in a tad more subtly. Greed...pure and simple.
