I've emptied and sponged out the tank. The instructions then said for me to undo a nut or something under the toilet. There is a white one above a metal pipe, but it is on so tight. I can't use a wrench I have because it is too long. Help please!

You are working on the right one from that description. The flexible pipe (usually a plastic hose with reinforcement) comes from the valve coming through the wall. It goes to the bottom part of that fitting sticking out of the bottom of the toilet tank. The valve inside the toilet is held on by a nut just above where the tubing is attached. You need to twist the nut holding the tubing counterclockwise to loosen it. Then you need to twist the remaining nut counterclockwise while holding the valve inside the toilet tank to keep that from turning.

If either is hard to turn (and you are going in the right direction to loosen) then you need the right tool. If you can't reach it with a wrench get a pair of gas pliers (jaws bent at tight angle to handles) and select the size that fits on the nut. They cost about $10 in Lowe's. Grab the tubing nut and twist till it get loose and then turn it off with your hand. Then grab the retaining nut and turn it to loosen it and take it off with your hand. Once they get loose they will come off in a few seconds.

Next take out and discard the valve in the tank. Drop the bottom of the new valve down into that hole and put its washer and nut on by hand. Turn it tight by hand (clockwise twist) and then turn a little more with the pliers to tighten the nut. Then put back the nut and tubing from the wall valve and turn it carefully by hand so it is on straight. Finally turn it tight with the pliers. That is another few minutes work.

Finally look at the directions on the valve package about adjusting the water height in the tank. Turn the supply valve on again and look for leaks. Then adjust the level as per the instructions. You are done and saved a bundle of bucks on that job.

If you're that unsure about how to complete the repair. Please call someone that has experience with this. Changing the parts in a toilet tank is just take the old part off and put the new on in its place.
