I just bought the Orange Box, which came with HL2. I already owned HL2. According to Valve, if I were to attempt to sell my old copy of HL2, it would violate the subscriber agreement and may result in my game account being disabled. How can this be? How can it be illegal for me to sell something I paid for and own and no longer will be using?

You do not own a subscriber agreement. Thats a lease. You can purchase a lease agreement but you do not own the lease item (like buying a lease agreement for a car).

A lease can be canceled by either party for reasons that were laid out at the purchase. And sometimes a lease can be sold. Like a lease on a car or a lease on a house. But the owner of the property has to agree to the transfer.
