How to dress for fall/winter?? I have a lot of clothes but the styles don't seem to go together. Am I missing some "basic" pieces that would help me match my clothes better?

I love the hip New Yorker, hi-lo style that they show in Lucky magazine, but when I try to mix & match diff. looks they never seem to go together.

I have one pair of jeans and lots of "trouser" style pants. Most of my shoes are dressy heels or dark ankle boots but my tops are casual. My fall skirts (wool knee length) hardly seem to go with anything! I have some boho & some preppy, "J crew" style pieces.

It is hard to mix and match the casual pieces with the dressier pieces.

Can you help?? What I'm asking is
1. What are VERSATILE pieces that are easiest to mix & match? For example, is there ONE style of skirt that I need to have in my wardrobe?
2. Are there any good guidelines for what to wear with what?
3. What are the rules about what shoes look good with which types of skirts/pant

small tiny..well cut jacket.
skinny leg trousers.
silk blouse
platform leopard shoes....
this is my look for fall.
invest in a few good silk blouses...they can be worn with jeans/skirts/trousers.
platform pumps..also good..but the 80's look is coming back..so a high heeled pump is a good investment.
plaid skirt..cashmere turtleneck...flat black suede boots..
ballet flats/platforms look great with jeans.
for dressy trousers..platforms/boots/pumps
skirts..platforms/pumps
try to stick with what style you like the best.
if you like classic dressing..invest in very classic pieces
if you are more casual..jeans/cords
the nice thing is that good cashmere sweaters and or silk blouses work with all sorts of clothing..
add a tiny jacket .
know what style looks best on you.
know what your lifestyle is & what clothes work with it.
shop off price stores..marshalls/loehmanns/tj maxx...
