Do you think it brings more excitement to the game or does it make a team game an individual skills contest? I personally don't like Shoot-Outs!

Moooseki makes an excellent point...OT should be a little longer but not 20 minutes!!

Bob Loblaw makes a good point too regarding the playoffs & shoot-outs!

I didn't like the shoot out from the begining .....it is exciting I'll give the NHL that....the last thing I want is to see my team get knocked outta the playoff race late in the season because they lost in a shootout...some would argue then your team shouldn't get themselves in a position where a shootout could determine their season....but still i don't like the shootout......everyone has this big thing against ties....when you play 82 games i don't have a problem with a couple ties here and there.

Your team has had three 20 minute periods to prove they're the better in the game... if they can't do that there should be a 10 minute overtime instead of 5.

Then the shootout makes sense. But 5 minutes is not long enough of an overtime period to make a real difference.

It does become an individual skills contest, which is the point. The team usually hinges on the play of the goalie (look at NJ, Vancouver and then look at teams with mediocre goaltending, Toronto, Chicago). The better goaltender earns the team that extra point!!

Yes I agree with you that the shoot-out does bring more excitement to the GAMES. However shoot-outs wreak havoc on the standings. With a guaranteed winner in every game and an extra point handed to the loser of the SO points are being handed out like candy and you really have to hold your breath when you are going down the stretch for the playoffs and you see one of your rival teams losing by one point. Did they hopefully lose in regulation...no most likely they lost in OT or a shoot-out as most teams play super conservatively when tied towards the end of the game.

I am against having shoot-outs however like anti-fighting fans, I am not running for the exits when they start.

I absolutely HATE the shootout... and you can throw 4-on-4 overtime into the same basket... both are not the game of hockey... However, the one redeeming factor is the fact that teams that have done the best in the SO (i.e. gotten the most extra points) have done poorly in the playoffs. In fact, of the last 8 conference finalists over the past two years, only Buffalo has been in the top half of the league in SO points. So the teams that play the best hockey still rise to the top.

As far as how it favors teams with good goaltenders... it doesn't. Holmqvist and Denis are the two best in the shootout... while guys like Backstrom, Giguere, Kiprusoff, Hasek, Emery, and Luongo are below average. Lundqvist is really the only past Vezina finalist who excels.

In my opinion, the shoot-outs just might have been a great thing to come out of the lock-out. What an exciting way to end a game! The top players on your team really get to show their stuff and be creative in trying to beat the goaltender. I believe it's a little of both excitement and individual skill. But both teams had five minutes to win with their team skill, so why not put the game in the hands of your big guys?

I personally don't like turning the game into a skills competition to decide a game. Team sport, decide it as a team.
That said, my stance has softened after watching a couple in person. Pretty exciting I guess. I don't see the foul of a tie game but as long as it stays in the regular season, I can deal with it. If they ever put it in the play-offs, I'd probably give up on the game, I'd be so disgusted.

The points for teams losing bother me as much. I suppose you can't do anything about giving the SO loser a point but WHY a point for an OT loser?

No way to shootouts or OT in regular season.

How does a one on one skills contest equate to finding a winner in a team sport?

I think shoot outs are the ultimate test of the teams last defence. When i say this im talking about the goalie. If you have a good goalie, you will be very successful in shootouts. You only have shoot outs when the teams are evenly matched. Then the better team, the team that comes out on tops, is the one with the better goalie of the two; i.e the one that can single handedly defend the puck from going in. And in my opinion, it looks pretty cool. h i h

I like shoot-outs but i think that there should be 20 min overtime before them, seriously how many games have been won in actual overtime not a shoot out.

I think shoot outs are great, and add a lot of intensity to an overtime game. Ive never have been to a game thats gone to a shoot out, but i hope i do someday. i think the final secs of the overtime period leading up to a shoot out, are crazy, but awesome.
