I personally don't think the examples you gave are that much alike, but I do agree that music in general becomes more and more alike over time. In a few centuries, there'll probably be only one genre of music left (and it's probably going to be some cheesy synthpop that's totally computer-manufactured)!

I don't think it has anything to do with record companies. It's really up to the band, and usually, they're the ones who change (or, I don't like to use this word, but "sell-out") to appeal to a more mainstream audience.

Edit: Eh, I'm sorry, I sorta worded that wrong. Those bands do sound somewhat similar, but I just think you could've given better examples, like The Pussycat Dolls and Danity Kane or The Fray and James Blunt. Just a personal opinion!

By the way, if you want to listen to some REALLY original music, why don't you go back to the late 1600's and listen to JS Bach or Scarlatti? No doubt without them, Black Sabbath or Yes or Deep Purple would not exist.

Oh my god...

Turn off the radio. What is on the radio is not the only music in the world! I am so sick of these questions: "Why is rock not like it used to be? Fall Out Boy vs. Led Zeppelin"... THERE ARE BANDS OTHER THAN THE FOUR YOU LISTED. What about Arcade Fire? They're a new band. I have yet to find a musician that sounds anything like Arcade Fire. Please actually look for music, you will find some great stuff.

I'm sorry if I sounded angry, but I'm really, really fed up with these questions.

Oh, and the girl with the mohawk several answers above me is totally correct. I mean, some mainstream radio bands: Coldplay, Nickelback, Maroon 5. Please don't try to tell me that any of these guys sound alike. (Not that it's fair to compare the amazing, wonderful Coldplay to the terrible, talentless Nickelback, but you get the idea.)

I will admit, some newer bands do sound alike. It's just the trend that's going arourd. People who love a band like Chiodos will like The Devil Wears Prada and bands like that. But there are some newer bands that defy the music today. Like I Am Ghost. hey don't sound like any other band. It may have to do with the main streem bands. Who in the world doesn't knoe fob or mcr.

when you mentioned suits I think you hit the nail on the head

A perfect example was the british Invasion....all of these bands played with the same type of chord structures and all looked and dressed somewhat alike , but all of them managed to sound different

I mean you could tell a Kinks song from a Hermans Hermits song 4 barres into the tune

I agree with youMCR, FOB PAnic all sound alike

and I don't evenlike Nickleback and I'm a Canadian

there are dozens of better bands in canada than these guys

Probably because one band does well and record executives go by whatever is selling to make the most money. Then they go into the studio and tell the bands to sound more emo or whatever and they come out with the same junk as the last band.

i don't think those bands sound all that alike.

you could say the same thing about mcr.

"you know, mcr and the new pornographers don't sound a thing alike" yadda yadda yadda

of course a band is going to sound similar to another.

i could list ten bands that sound like black sabbath, you just chose not to mention those, you mentioned bands that really don't sound like black sabbath.

so your "logic" makes no sense.

if you pick bands of the same sub genre and era and that are popular, of course they're going to sound alike.

but if you pick random bands from different time periods and such, like you did with black sabbath, they're not going to sound alike at all.

so it all depends on what bands you listen to, or choose to pick for making a point.

all i'm saying is, think it through before you ask a question next time.

Well, if one of those bands hit it with a huge group of teens, record companies run to get all those little bands that like to fix their hair and makes little girls scream and sign and play them on the radio.
In turn, the teens see all these soundalike bands being signed and assume they should all listen to the, so all the little teens listen to those bands. Then the record companies see all these little teens listening to more of these bands and sign on even more soundalike bands. Vicious cycle, if you get what the heck I'm saying. I'm kinda half asleep so not much is making sense, tell me if you don't follow.... It's not your fault.

...theres too much money to be made by marketing the same formula over and over for the music biz to take a chance on something new and different...unfortunately a lot of people eat it up...and many great acts never get the backing to go anywhere because they don't fit the mold of what the industry knows will sell...and real fans have a hard time finding interesting sounds to enjoy...

for the same reason all the 80's metal bands started to sound alike in the end. it becomes formulaic and the record companies force everyone to sound the same so they can make money.
