I've read all over of people still getting pregnant while on the pill, and I was wondering about depo provera, I'd like to get on that. But I'm worried because it's not something you take every day and I'm worried that it's not really all that effective, and I want to be able to graduate college without any pregnancy scares, if you could help me that would be great. And whats the chance of getting pregnant if you're on depo and using a condom?

Most MDs will advise not to use DepoProvera if you will at any point want to become pregnant. Many that use DP have problems achieving a pregnancy once they stop the medication. Some women never achieve a pregnancy after having been on DP.

The pill is extremely effective if taken exactly as you should. Take it at the same time every day and do not skip a pill. Yes, DP is convenient, however, it does have its drawbacks. I did not get my period for almost two years once I stopped DP. Even after my MD used Provera to jump start my periods, I still did not get my period. I had numerous pregnancy tests done...all negative.

Good luck to you!

It has been almost 8 years since I was on Depo Provera so maybe this information is outdated. Check with your GYN first to be sure.

I did not get pregnant while using it. I thought it was convenient and inexpensive, but I was with only one man during the time I was taking the shots. Depo Provera will NOT protect you from disease, so use other precautions, such as the condoms you mentioned. I would think the likelihood of becoming pregnant while using both of these methods of birth control is basically zero. Depo Provera is supposed to be immediately effective, unlike the Pill. In other words, you don't have to wait a month to be "safe."

On the other hand, I went off Depo Provera the month before my wedding because I was 31 and wanted to get pregnant quickly. We tried for years -- took fertility shots, had scheduled intercourse, artificial insemination, etc. -- and never got pregnant. There was no organic reason why I didn't get pregnant, so I still sometimes wonder. Maybe it was the Depo. Unlikely, I know. But a possibility. Please weigh all of your options and make sure you use at least one disease prevention method when you have sex.

I use depo because I know I can't remember to take a pill everyday at the same time. I absolutely love it. You will have some weird side effects the first few months (spotting, soreness, etc) that is common with any hormonal birth control.

I've been on it a year now, and am baby free. Using a secondary method is always a good idea, especially since depo does not protect against STDs.

I've never heard anything about depo causing breast cancer. I'm a firm believer that if you have breasts, you are risk for breast cancer no matter what you do.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me (I have it open on my profile).

Depo Provera has the same effectiveness as the pill. <1-2 reported pregnancies / 100 women / year.

I was on depo provera and the shots lasts for 3 months. You have to go every 3 months to get the shot but you should still use a back up method of birth control such as comdoms. it effective the same as the pill would be. You can get pregnant on any birth control

I would never recommend depo provera to ANYONE.

Many women have serious health risks because of the shot.

Please check out the reviews at http://www.rateitall.com/t-330-birth-control-methods.aspx and google "depo provera lawsuit" before deciding on the shot.

And, you CAN get pregnant on depo provera. I know a few people who have.

Nothing is 100% except for abstinence.

hey im 14 and im on depo. anywho id talk to your gyno first to get all the info you want. i know tht it is effective for 3 months and then you get another injection. the shots do not hurt at all! its a really small chance tht youll get pregnant with a condom AND depo. thts like twice the protection! whooo! anyway go to your gyno and tlak with them to reassure tht you want to do it, its not for everyone

I haven't had a period for three years. I've only gained 10 pounds in three years. That's not really bad.
