Glenn has lied to you.

Jane Magnolia (Magnolia x liliflora) will set it's flower buds in the late summer or fall of the year, for the next season. So pruning in the fall would in effect cut off the flowers that it might have in the spring. In short, that would be a disaster. Instead, trim the magnolia in the month or so following it's bloom. Thin out some of the branches to allow for some air circulation, and reduce the size as desired. Don't cut more than 25% of the plant in one season. Follow that up with an organic fertilizer, such as ESPOMA hollytone.

Japanese snowball plant... hmm, that's tricky, because the common name doesn't help me. I think you might be asking about Viburnum opulus 'Roseum'. That would follow the same advice as the magnolia. Trim it right after it's done blooming. You might be able to be a little more aggressive with your pruning on this plant, but I wouldn't recommend going too severe.

I hope that this helps
Good luck-
