Spending $500 billion per year on the perpetuation of the world's largest and mightiest war machine, the US (with a mere 5% of the world's population) accounts for half of the world's military spending. Regardless of which half of the Democratic/Republican Duopoly has been in power, the ruling elite has perpetuated domination of the rest of the world through direct military intervention (think Iraq), economic warfare (i.e. the persistent yet failed policies toward Cuba), and overt or covert support of ruthless totalitarian regimes which advance the interests of US corporations (i.e. the Shah of Iran).

The United States accounts for half of all military spending on earth. With troops stationed in over 119 countries ─all ostensibly fighting for freedom rather than any whiff of imperial hegemony─we spend more on defense than Russia, China, Japan, Britain, France, and Germany combined. If we add onto these enormous outlays America’s list of unfunded liabilities, military and civil service pensions, the prospect of 70 million baby boomers retiring, a third with no retirement savings at all,i we can more fully appreciate Mr. Greenspan’s astringent parting words that Bush’s profligate deficit spending spells potential disaster for the nation.

i'm fascinated approximately decrease government spending. Our u . s . desperately desires it, and we at the instant are spending ourselves into oblivion. in case you get a hollow so deep, it may develop into impossible so which you will circulate slowly out of. I even have faith that regardless of materials we've, the militia could get it first. we are a rustic that's at warfare. we can nevertheless decrease government spending and on the comparable time shop our militia sturdy. We in simple terms ought to stability the fee variety. in spite of the indisputable fact that, all of us know that this might take an act of Congress. We additionally know finished nicely that whether that's solid for the folk, then Congress is against it.

Sorry, I read this, and I'm not sure where the Hell you came up with 41%. The US spends about 41% of the money that the entire world spends on military, but it is nowhere near 41% of tax revenue.

Ideally? That's one of the few things the national level should be spending money on. The rest should be handled at the state/local level.

The link is for the entire world not just USA.

Isn't the military what they are supposed to be spending it on?

At least that's what I read in the constitution.

If it was for defense, it wouldn't need to be as high, but people tend to get irritated with other people who try to tell them how to live, so it probably good that, that much is being spent on it.

I agree with funding the military, but most of that goes to Iraq... not to making soldier's lives better. If it was going towards rebuilding our army, which is having too many problems internally to count, I wouldn't mind.

that is alarming, i would say. i am all for a strong defense, but the disparity of spending between us & the rest of the world makes me wonder why we are so afraid of everybody

i guess this explains why we are a country of fear, and politicians use that fear on both sides to get elected & keep their power

Someone posted the truth earlier.

As percentage of its GDP, the United states spends 3.7% on military. This is higher than France's 2.6%, and lower than Saudi Arabia's 10%.[6] This is historically low for the United States since it peaked in 1944 at 37.8% of GDP. Even during the peak of the Vietnam War the percentage reached a high of 9.4% in 1968.[7]
