The Flying Dutchman legend goes back to the days when the Dutch East India company was a presence in North America and the Dutch controlled New York City. That was about 300 years ago.

It is just a myth and is not real.

The flying Dutchman? Then yes I do seem to recall hearing that there was a ship by that name.

According to history books, a lot of people have accounts of seeing it... Some of them really important people also, like prince's, kings, and even a few priests... So most likely it did exist, however stories of the true origins over time have been blown out of proportion...
