Medicare does pay for home health care. There are all kinds of government subsidized housing out there also. Social security is not the only thing to look at, it pays basic income for elderly and disabled. Medicare takes care of health issues and HUD helps assist with housing.

It sucks, I agree. What really burns my a**, is the fact the all congressmen / women and senators are exempt form the health care reform. Is that saying to everyone, you all need this crappy government health care program, but we the officials can still choose our better insurance coverage. Talk about double standards. The sad fact of this program, is the fact that it will affect my children and grandchildren more than myself. The loop hole that is going to cause issues, you can reject the government plan forcing others to cover your expense, then on the way to the emergency room, to keep from paying the fine for not having insurance. You can sign up in the ambulance, hence if your healthy, you have avoided paying all those months or years to cover everyone else. I think this is wrong, I agree that something needs to be done, but this program with the insurance companies and the government working together, is wrong. I wish I had money to invest in the insurance companies, as soon as this is signed into effect, there stocks will skyrocket.

I agree that everyone should be treated fair but life aint fair. Homeless people some had a good education but after high school grow up and didnt want to do anything with their life. As for eldery people they arent just dumped in the homes to die they are put there because the family is at work most of the time and cant take care of them and others are the same way the time they need help the family is ai work and cant do anything. Most family membvers feel basd for puting them in the home but knows that best for them instead of being home by their selfs and cant help plus if something happends to them when they are at home and cant help them they would feel REALLY bad. They do go visit them at the home they just dont leave them there to die. Plus sometimes it the best thing to do.

As most of us know, the social security system in the US is failing. We have quite a bit to work on in the health care department for low income to middle class families here in the us in the next presidencies to come. Social security doesn't pay much (including extras like home health/asst lvng) because they have to cut costs where they can, sadly. As far as the nursing home question, it's really a question of family values and morals here in the states. Not many kids are willing to take care of their parents in their homes or even help to make the standard of living for their parents better. Some excuses have been made saying that we are too busy as Americans these days, but to what extent should we stop being so busy to care for our elderly and brainstorm on better healthcare for our nation?

I am an accountant at a non-profit senior residential care facility and convalescent hospital. (California)
Medi-Cal (California version of Medicaid) and Medicare take care of most of the cost for senior care. The family can contribute to the care, and provide a larger room, or even a small home on the grounds.
There are so many activities for the ambulatory that it would tire out a young person, going on all the outings, yoga classes, etc. These seniors live a very comfortable life.

Okay, I pretty much agree with you that the elderly and sick shouldn't be dumped in a nursing home, but what's your alternative? For the federal government to spend even more money that they don't have, force kids to take care of their own parents, or maybe we should require people on Welfare to spend one day per week taking care of the elderly?
Who exactly are we going to force to do what to make the change you want made? It's not happening on its own, someone will have to be forced to change. Who's it gonna be?

They do in Oz!!! not social security but another government agency that helps the elderly to stay at home as long as possible.
There is home help for domestic chores, maintenance around the home, gardening and a nursing service for medications, wound dressing, bathing and that sort of stuff. All free!!

I think that the government should have a system to take care of the elderly. They should not have to pay one bill. They have worked for many years paying into the system. My mom and dad spent all their savings in just a few years. This last December my mom spent the last of the money. She cried because it scared her not to have a sense of security.

Most people are purchasing Long Term Care insurance. If you don't you are at the mercy of the state you live in. Living with dignity in the later years in life will cost you some money. Plan ahead.
