There's a few things that should be on your computer if you want to be protected as much as possible.

*A good web browser.... Internet Explorer isn't the safest choice in the world, although there are some security holes in Firefox that have been found, it's a much safer browser compared to IE. (Others prefer Opera as well.)

*A firewall....
Comodo Firewall (free)

*Good anti-virus and spyware-scanning programs.
If you don't want to spend money on software, you can grab the basic freeware essentials...

AVAST 4 Home Edition Antivirus

SuperAntiSpyware (free)
http://www.superantispyware.com/
(SuperAntiSpyware includes 'homepage hijack protection' that'll stop your homepage being changed without your knowledge or consent).

Spybot S&D (free)

Ad-aware SE Personal (free)

And clean up the clutter with...
CCleaner (free)

N.B....Make sure to scan your system regularly so that nothing slips through the cracks, and update the definition files whenever you're prompted to.

Those are the basic steps that should be taken to drastically cut down the risk of your PC being exploited. Although there's always new exploits that pop up from time to time, you'll be prepared for them.

On my router, a Netgear RP614, I can set up content filtering that will also record the last 128 websites that were allowed or blocked. Now 128 isn't much, but could be enough to get you in trouble. I suspect that other routers have a capability for reporting which websites have been accessed through it. BTW, I'm 26 and living at home too. I'm fortunate enough that my parents don't know how to check what websites I go to and don't care. But I am still respectful enough not to look at anything "inappropriate" when they're in the room. Not sure how your dad's figuring out your internet usage if you are careful enough to wipe out you browsing history, cache, and temp files, besides using something like what I mentioned in the first paragraph.

Here is a tip on a regular basis change the username and passwords to the website accounts that you regular visit. Especialy if you check your bank account online This way a hacker will have a hard time. Normaly a hacker needs to be close by to access your computer via your router.

have you heard of the saying "security is an illusion"

i don't think any human/computer can provide you with real security.

but the best you can do is try to know as much as you can about how pc's are hacked and how your pc can be penetrated.
