Let N = number of nickels and D = number of dimes.

You know that total number of coins N + D = 36
You also know that total value 10D + 5N = 250 (talking pennies here).

There are two equations which is enough for 2 unknowns.

If you subtract D from both sides of the first equation then you get N = 36 - D. Put that into second equation for N.

10D + 5(36-D) = 250. Multiply it out and get 10D+180 -5D = 250. That becomes 5D = 250-180 = 70.

Divide both sides by 5 and get D = 14 dimes.
Since N = 36-D then N = 36-14 = 22 nickels.
