The main reason Rivera is better than Hoffman is because Rivera is a big game pitcher in the postseason and Hoffman has not proved that.

Not a big fan of Trevor Hoffman, but I think I am going old school on this one. Rivera is the best closer in the postseason, but I would have to rank HOFers Rollie Fingers and Bruce Sutter as 1-2 with Eck tied with Rivera. I was a young adult (senior year in high school) watching from the Oakland Bleachers when ECK started to close.

In my view inside the tail of the tape does not lie. Stats:

Rivera: 13 years 69-80, 2.35 era, 443 saves, 953 innings
Sutter: 12 years 68-71, 2.83, 300 saves, 1042.3 innings
Fingers: 17 years 114-118, 2.90, 341 saves, 1701.3 innings

Sutter pitched 100 innings 5 times
Fingers pitched 100 innings (excluding 69-71 when he made five or more starts): 8 times
Rivera pitched 100 innings: once (as set-up man)

All Star Selections: Fingers (7), Sutter (6) and Rivera (8)
Awards: Cy Youngs: Fingers and Sutter; MVP: Fingers; Rolaids relief award: Fingers (4), Sutter (4) and Rivera (4); Saves league leader: Fingers (3) (1 AL and 2 NL), Sutter (5) and Rivera (3).

The key I beleive is the Innings pitched. Rivera's high of 107 was when he was a set-up man. He usually averages around 69-80 a year. Bruce Sutter is first 10 years (his last two with the Braves his arm was shot) had a range of 83-122. Fingers (again execulding 69-71) had a range of 79 (again last two years was on and off the DL with arm troubles (84-85 and didn't pitch in 83) (also 81 was a strike year and the end of 82 blew out his arm) to 134. Fingers and Sutter had many more 2 and 3 inning saves than Rivera.

One arguement for Sutter and Fingers is the teams. Yes, Fingers did play half of career for A's when they were at their peak. But he did put in 4 years with God Awful late 70's Padres. Sutter was played for the Cubs during the late 70's when they were horrible. Didn't get to a good team until St.Louis.

As for postseason Rivera is the best and there is no argument there.

Mariano Rivera is the undisputed best stopper in POST SEASON. Trevor Hoffman has the most saves, but it's important to remember that closers like Lee Smith often played on losing teams, with fewer chances to GET saves. Dan Quissenberry and others might have been the best for 5 or 6 years or so.

Ice in his veins when it came to playoff appearances. Though he is on the downside of a first-ballot HOF career, he can still get the job done. Arguably the key hurler in the Yanks WS victories during his tenure on the last great string of dominance by the club.

Yes, Mariano Rivera is the best of all time. Anybody that says otherswise, is kidding themselves.

noles07:
mo has had countless "games to win"...and he won probably 99% of them.
you can't ignore all his saves when thinking about his few blown saves!

but i honestly think mariano is the best closer in the game. he's definitely proven himself over the years. i hope he stays with the yankees!!
