This is a common problem. The pc and laptop companies are serious when they say Designed FOR Vista. They use parts that will only work with Vista, so when people install XP they lose sound.

If your pc came with Vista preloaded, there are probably no drivers written for XP. Your sound card won't work with the XP operating system. Every Vista pc I've worked on has had the same problem. If you want XP and the only problem is the sound card, I recommend buying an XP compatible card.

Thats the bad part of down-grading a windows. When it comes with one operating system. it doesn't like others. um.. go into your device manager and see what kind of Sound-card you have. Once you do that. you're 1/2 way home.
next.. Goto http://driverguide.com and do a search for your drivers there. :) Chances are you'll need to create an account if you don't already have one. But, that should be enough to kick you over.
