"Horse cart" possable origin of CAR Automobile Quadra-Cycle (Ford) Horseless Carriage is where I believe the term Carriage was shortened to CAR Powered by a version of Gustav Otto's 4 Cycle engine. And that term did not stick until the late 1930's.

It was shortened from "motor car". The word "car" is a shortened form of the word "carriage". "Carriage" comes from French "carier" "to carry" and Latin "carrus" which means "wheeled vehicle".
