Number 1 you should make sure that your iTunes is up and running before you connect your ipod.. they tend to be finicky like that. Second second i assume you just plug your ipod in and pull the plug without actually "disconnecting" your iPod what i mean by that is that in i tunes there is a button that stops connection to your iPod before you pull that plug you NEEEEEEED and i cant specify the severity of NEEEED to hit that button cause not doing so can corrupt your ipod.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Other than making sure your ipod is registered, all I can say is if you've gone through all the itunes "trouble shooting" tips, and your still at a loss just sell it, and get yourself a good mp3 player. ipods and pc's sometimes just don't mix
I actually had the same problem myself, and that's what I ended up doing.

Maybe if you re-boot the computer, it will work. If not, the usb connector may be bad. You can always contact Apple customer support. They are good at troubleshooting.
