But I can tell you that Maya Angelou is phenomenal because she has overcome a great deal of adversity to become the talented, prolific, spiritual, worldly woman that she is today. I would suggest you look for her book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings to find out about her childhood. I believe it has pictures of her and her brother as a child. Maya Angelou is a "Phenomenal woman" because she rose from a harsh childhood to being the strong, confident woman that she is now. In her novel, "I know Why the Caged Bird Sings," she speaks abut her hard childhood. She was raped and traumatized to the point where she did not speak for several years. Can you imagine being so hurt and emotionally disturbed that you stopped speaking?

Years later, she became a "madam" in a house of prostitution. The madam is the woman who procures, (gets) men to pay for the services of the prostitute.) She survived racism and being without loving parents. As an adult, she was a victim of domestic abuse and other poor treatment by men. She has seen it all.

After having lived such a rough life, she got her college education, got married, had a son, became an influential writer (novelist, poet) and friend to many famous people, including Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, Nelson Mandela and many others. Many people look to her for advice because they consider her to be a very wise woman. She is also a college professor

So, you see, Maya Angelou is a phenomenal woman because she has risen above a lot of negatives that would have broken most people, and she gives of herself in order to help others. What a woman!!! Maya Angelou is a phenomenal women through her powerful writing, she has inspired generations of women, African Americans and all people who struggle to overcome prejudice, discrimination, and abuse. those who knew Maya Angelou and others inspired by her life, wisdom, and words thought and look to her as a hero. I think she's got a great way of interpreting things. I've only read one of her poems, but it's touched me really deeply. Have you read "I know why the caged bird sings"? I loved the way she used birds as a way of telling people to treasure what they have.

She is a great writer, especially of poetry. Read the poem she read at Clinton's inauguration. I'd do a google image search for pictures of her.
