I work for an answering service and our boss told us that if a patient/caller asks our name, that we are REQUIRED to give it. Mind you, she means only our first name... however, I don't even feel comfortable giving out my first name in some circumstances. Are there any privacy laws against this? Someone please HELP ^_^

You need to either give your name or some operator ID number -- if you feel that strongly about personal privacy, then inform your supervisor and say you are going to give out an alias -- and use the same one every time -- unless they allow you to give out some internally generated ID number.

No, your name is not private. If your employer requires you to answer the phone in a certain way then you have to do it. If you don't want to, then find a new job.

Your employer cannot require you to do something illegal. You would not be allowed to impersonate someone else (like a doctor or attorney). But as long as the work is legal, your only recourse would be to find a new job.

It is company policy.

You don't HAVE to - you can quit.

Those are your options.
