LOL I only asked this question to see how many idiots would say Fall Out Boy. Don't get me wrong, Fall Out Boy are awesome, but they're not punk rock. Neither are Alesana, Good Charlotte, Green Day, or Avril Lavigne, but they're still good (except for Avril).

My favorite punk rock bands are:
The Ramones
The Sex Pistols (of course)
The Misfits
The Dead Kennedys
The Dead Boys
The Adicts
Stiff Little Fingers

WTF? Are you kidding me? blessthefall? They're a Christian post-hardcore band NOT punk.

To the person that said Fear: great choice!

To Emo_Punk-xo: You're pathetic. Nobody said blink-182 BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT PUNK ROCK. They're pop-punk.
Simple Plan and New Found Glory are pop punk.
The Used is rock.

The Faction kicked ***
The Dead Kennedys kicked ***
Minor Threat rocked
The Descendents rock
The Misfits rock
The Sex Pistols are pretty good
The Clash is original.
The Ramones were pretty badass
(note the name trend)

As for best band? As in actually answering the question? =P
I'd go with DK.

But it all started with the clash, and the sex pistols and soon after the ramones an misfits.

-EDIT-
and the Pumpkins are... all over the place. But certainly not punk. They're most definitely 'Rock' and could probably fall under 'Grunge' or 'Metal' at certain points... but i think theyre best described either by name or simply 'Rock'.

-EDIT#2-
Like what you want, and think what ya want- but none of the punk bands around now are really "Punk". music like good charlotte, fall out boy, and avril lavigne is all pop-rock or (if you REALLY wanna push the name) pop-punk. but none of them are "Punk" and its almost an insult to the original dumbasses to say so. Listen to DK's "Pull My Strings" (great song btw).

its not about how you dress. not even REALLY about how you act. more about how you THINK.
seems like my whole generation missed that concept. >.<

Soo many too choose from, of course they are all form the 70's or 80's, cuz there are like no real punk rock bands now a days
Form the UK -
Sex Pistols and THe Clash of course - they were the first two british punk rock bands, adn were both awesome, the Pistols were so punk rock and had great songs and the Clash were really talented adn were great song writers
from the US -
The Ramones - they were the god fathers of punk, they invented it and were the first to play it,
the Dead Kennedys- such an awseome band more of the hard core punk rock

I CANT Beleve saw somebody put Avril Lavigne on here, and Fall out boy. I mean come on!! two HORIBBLE bands and not at all punk rock
What is wrong with thees people

Of classic punk I'd have to go with Richard Hell and The Voidoids, The Germs, The Adicts, Crass, The Clash, The Dead Kennedys, early Siouxsie and The Banshees, and The Ramones

...of the more contemporary, I'd have to go with Reagan Youth, Minor Threat, maybe some Social D, and for sure The Casualties

I gotta give the guy who said Bananarama a thumbs up, whoever goes against the grain like that is definitely punk rock.

In the meantime, I have to say my favorite punk band of all times is a toss-up between The Dead Kennedys and The Descendents.

Cotterall: A Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, etc...are not punk.
and to gpibama: the Ramones were around and playing shows, in England no less, before the Pistols. ;)

Thank you! At first when I saw Fall Out Boy, all I could think was "Great, another post telling me FOB is punk"

I have to say... Black Flag,
Minor Threat,
The Clash (if you want to consider them punk),
and Leftover Crack

Some of the best punk there is!

(Leftover Crack is more so ska, but I put them on the list anyway... )

The Clash, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Echo and the Bunnymen, A Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, X, Blondie, The Slits, Patti Smith, Nirvana, Hole, L7, etc.

I've always been suspicious of claims that the Smashing Pumpkins were punk/grunge. Their early records sounded like folk, blues, psychedelic rock, art-rock, metal and pop mixed together. Nothing like grunge, new wave or punk, not that I do not respect their talents but it wasn't punk. Talking Heads and Television had a few good singles but watching the lead singer of the Heads in video drives me nuts.

Duran Duran and Depeche Mode started off as new wave bands. I do not discriminate.
