It isn't the disk that's dirty it is the player. Get a player cleaner. It will work.

Wow, what a coincidence! I had this same problem a few weeks ago. Try buying a DVD lens cleaner disc. If that doesn't work, you can try to open up the dvd player and clean the lens yourself using rubbing alcohol. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, or it just won't work, send the player to the manufacturer or to a shop (I used Radioshack)

if the disc has too many scratches it wont read it

or else the disc was burned at a speed faster than the dvd player can read it
or if youre putting it in computer, well same thing

disc turns in the drive at the same speed it was written
so if you have an old dvd player or comp it wont read the newer discs that were burned at high speeds

Your laser could be misaligned or have some other malfunction, or there could just be dirt or dust inside your unit. A problem with the laser itself usually means warranty work or a replacement.

Could be that you started to use a CD-R disc and didn't put anything on it and then you can only do that once with CD-R. Pitch it.
