i read a couple of chapters, i didnt get it!!! Why is George and Martha crazy with the guests??

Oh, I had to read it for a class on comedy in literature, I think. I found it depressing, and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

But, it was supposed to be funny. Married couples are not supposed to act that way, but sometimes they secretly feel that way toward each other. Most couples also keep their bickering in private, but this couple had gone beyond that -- they were so wrapped up in their personal drama that they didn't care anymore that they had an audience to their dirty linen!

It's supposed to be shocking (and therefore funny) that they are willing to express their mutual hatred so clearly. And, there are some good lines in the play. But overall, I would have walked out of the dinner party, and left them to go for it long before the real guests did.

Oh, IIRC, the guests were a young, idealistic couple still cooing and billing. So *that* contrast (and the loss of their innocence) was supposed to be funny, too.

Read the whole thing or get the movie with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor. To tell the truth, it doesn't make sense, it's just entertaining.

lmfao, i thought the same thing. you have to keep reading/watching. but to tell you the truth it never really makes sense. it's just highly entertaining.
