How do I burn a video onto a DVD and be able to watch it with any DVD player?

How do I burn a video from my computer onto a DVD and be able to watch it with any DVD player? The video formats would probably be predominantly .avi files as well as .wmv files.

I know how to burn stuff on DVDs, but the videos just doesn't work on DVD players.
