In the TV show "Kung Fu" from the 1970s, "Grasshopper" was the name of the student who was learning life lessons and kung fu from his master. When the master spoke to the boy, teaching him about being a man, learning from his mistakes, or a new martial arts lesson, he would say something like, "The road is long, Grasshopper, but the oxen are patient".
The person in the email is calling you a "learner" or "underling" or saying you are not as smart as he is.
