The most commonly told theories are
1. Having the house blessed or some other religious ceremony that either forces the ghost (demon) out of the house or puts the ghosts at peace (proper burial, etc.)
2. The living do something that completes the ghosts unfinished business (like a priest having his uncompleted masses completed by another (living) priest).
3. Getting the ghost to realize that he or she is actually dead and moving into the light (on the heaven, etc.)

Since you said you're working on fiction, I'm not going to bother explaining that ghosts don't exist. It IS fiction, after all.
There are several ways you can get rid of a ghost, according to stories, and it all depends on what kind of ghost you have. For example, many ghosts cannot cross running water. If you're being pursued by a ghost outdoors, all you have to do is cross a stream. If you're trying to get rid of a haunting ghost, I suppose you could conduct an exorcism. But first, I'd probably try to contact the ghost and find out what it wants. After all, maybe it's not an evil spirit at all, but a deceased person with some unfinished business. Maybe the ghost will point you to the location of a lost fortune, for example. If your ghost is simply an unintelligent remnant of a once-living being, you might not be able to get rid of it. It may simply be attached to a location and will continue to appear until whatever residual energy that's creating it has dissipated.
Good luck with your story!

My brother as soon as lived in a dwelling that used to be 'haunted', or anything you desire to name it. There used to be a terrible feeling approximately the situation, and a horrible stench of rotting fleash that 'moved' across the condo. If you stepped into it, you desired to throw-up and cry. He 'smugged' the condo a couple of instances to take a look at and blank out the distance, and put off any terrible vigour. This one used to be an uncongenial one, and nonetheless- so much likey under no circumstances left. It gave the impression to paintings for the entire condo, however one room. The laundry room grew to become this rather frightening and uncomfortable room- so that you have shyed away from it- consistently! You would do that system, it labored ample for him- lengthy ample even as he lived there. Aside from the laundry room. I feel that you just use a sort of candy grass, some thing that you just could get at a usual retailer. Like an indian grass. You would certainly seem it up on-line.

Are you sure you want to come up with the most common way of getting rid of a Ghost?
How about giving your story a unique twist and come up with a whole new way?
How about sending it back in time with a time machine?

It depends on what kind of ghost you're writing about. People are the same dead or alive, so there are not so good spirits out there as well as good. The good spirits outweigh the bad though, and don't want to hurt anyone. A lot of them are lost and don't know where to go. 7 out of ten of the spirits I've helped to pass I simply had to call in the angels to guide to the light. A few I've had to convince that it was all right to cross over (some people simply weren't told what it going to be like, they don't know what to expect or even understand where they're at). One I actually had to tell him that he WAS dead.

One way is by asking for a trained professional to "cleanse" the space of residual energy of past lives/events.
OR
if you look into Kabbahlaism (Wiccans have also pinched this method)
You could cast the "Banishment of the Lesser Pentagram"
which is a three part ritual drawing the four elemental pentagrams and the four archangels and then fixing the two together and expanding the pentagrams till it fills teh affected area like a web which will catch and help the residual energy to move on.

You could have your protagonist come to his senses. This sounds like a smarty pants answer, but I am being honest when I say the only "cure" I know of for ghosts is not believing in them to begin with. That's why I say there are no such things as haunted places, only haunted people.

I hear that they prey on fear...so I guess if you weren't afraid of them, they would get bored and go away. However, I think some of them like to just hang around and watch people. (kind of like those perverts that put video cameras in people's houses etc. to watch them). Also, there are people who have learned how to astral travel and they're perverts too. I don't think they have any right to go into someone's house etc. anymore than they would if they went in their physical body without permission. Of course, when people do ouiga board etc..they are giving spirits permission to come in..just as if you'd give a stranger permission to come into your house. So I don't know if there's really any way to get rid of a ghost. Too bad there's not a law that makes them leave..then you could get a "restraining order" against them, I guess. IOW...IDK.
EDIT I think 'hislady" has a good idea. I've always thought that "exorcists" shouldn't always be so mean. Sometimes it's not what they think it is..it's just a spirit who wants a place to stay and somebody to be with .I could be wrong..just an idea.

First you get 2 proton accelerators, then you capture the ghost in the 2 proton beams. Once you have him you slide a magnetic force field trap under him and guide the ghost in to the trap and close the trap.

i am a very paranormal and superstitious person. if you think the ghost is intruding on you or your family and you want it gone. i would go to your nearest church and talk to a minister or priest or somebody like that. Then, ask them for help and be sincere so they take you seriously. Many religious people don't believe in the paranormal so you might have to look up paranormal in the phone book. you should find somebody. if not then go to ask.com and you can get someones number. they'll probably sprinkle holy water around your house and say many payers. Good luck if you really have a ghost problem and if not, its cool that ur interested (like me) :)
