One of my guppies or neon tetras (I'm not sure which one) had some babies yesterday (2) They were really tiny and swimming on the top of the water. I've never taken care of baby fish before but I bought a breeder net to separate them from the other fish and some baby fish food. What else do I need to do to ensure that they are healthy? Should I put a plant in their net so they can hide? (do they have hiding instincts?) Should I keep the tank light off? I did today because I thought they would do better in darkness. How long until they are full grown and can be put with the other fish?

Any other suggestions?

You need a breeder net and fry food, until you can get those, get your regular net you have there at the house, and kind of corral them into it so they don't get eaten.Congrats on the Babies!

They are definitely guppy fry as neon tetras are egg layers and their eggs usually get eaten. You have to work very hard to get tetra eggs safely hatched out. Guppy fry do have hiding instincts and will feel more secure if there are some plants to hide in. They should be kept in warm water (78-82 degrees) and fed small amounts of food often to get their maximum potential growth and color.

Best live fry foods are baby brine shrimp and microworms. Finely crushed flake foods or liquid fry food high in protein and spirulina content are also good to help them develop rapidly and get good color. They won't mind the dark as it will make them feel safer, but you should leave them on a normal light schedule (light in the day, dark at night) so that some algae will grow for them to snack on between feedings.

They should be sexable at around 4 weeks and should be safe from being eaten by the adult guppies at around that age. Maybe even earlier. As long as they are big enough not to fit into the other fish's mouths.

I would highly suggest getting some floating plants, they love to hide!!! Also, it will be more than a month before they can be big enough to not get eaten, but you can put them with everybody else along with their floating hiding spots, it's good for them. Smaller fish always get eaten, if you don't want this to happen, maybe get a small tank for them until they are a good size.

They eat flakes with the rest of the fish... really, it's what the mama ate when she was pregnant, wasn't it?
