with Rickey Henderson? As far as I remember, Rickey was a super star. Or does his Majesty just hate everyone? Frizzer, maybe you would know?

Incognito has got it mostly right about Steinbrenner and Henderson in the 1980's. It wasn't just one issue between the two it was many issues. At that time Henderson was a much wilder version of Manny and Steinbrenner didn't believe any player was bigger than the team. There was a bizarre clubhouse atmosphere at that time and Billy Martin and Henderson never got along and later when Dallas Green took over as manager it even got worse. Martin once insisted that every player pull up his stirrups so the socks show and Henderson didn't like that. He got all the players to throw their stirrups in a large container and Henderson burned them all. Steinbrenner had about enough of Henderson and called him to his office and when Henderson came out he said there was no problem with Steinbrenner, and Henderson said he was like a "branch floating in the breeze" and not even Steinbrenner could tell him what to do. The final straw was around 1989, I think, when Rickey showed up late for spring training, under Dallas Green, and told him he had more important business to attend to. None of this set very well with Steinbrenner and they eventually parted ways.

Steinbrenner tends to hate anyone who gets bigger than the Yankees, hence Joe Torre, Rick Henderson, Reggie Jackson, Yogi Berra. He's got a God complex obviously. I think Rickie Henderson in particular rubbed him the wrong way. Before Manny was being Manny, Ricky was being Ricky, and sometimes that meant curiously long stints on the bench or DL with odd injuries. This was the 80's version of the Yankees and Steinbrenner and it was a serious mess back then.
