We don't want to handle it because it will then go into more shock. It is not hurt enough to be euthanized it seems. It is a common possum, approximately the size of a regular hand, but it looks as if it is too big to be nursing. What should we feed it to try and make it more comfertable?

Using gloves and a blanket, so you are not bitten, place the possum in a large cardboard box. Cover it so the possum can not escape, but make sure it is well ventilated so it can breathe.

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm

These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the required state and federal licenses to keep the animals until they are healthy enough to be released back into the wild.

Do not call animal control, they will destroy the possum. Do not take the possum to a vet, to the SPCA, the humane society or any other person/organization that deals primarily with domestic animals. These people/organizations are for pets, and they are not licensed to deal with wild animals.

Do not attempt to care for the possum yourself - it needs medical attention that you are not qualified to give, and you need special permits to keep wild animals.

I worked in our local hospital ER for 5 years and I was constantly amazed when a parent would bring their child in with a dog bite wound from the family pet, saying the same thing over and over "How could he/she do that?! has been a part of our family for years!!" I always wanted to tell them "Get a clue. Dogs are predators. Their family dynamics have nothing to do with what *you* think a family is."

Possums are nasty, disease-spreading animals.

Don't touch it. Either bash it's head in with a shovel to put it out of it's misery, or leave it alone and some other possum will come along and kill it and eat it.

If you think I'm kidding about them eating their own wounded or dead, I'm not. I've seen it before, many times.

I just hate possums!

You need to put it out of its misery. A wounded animal will die slowly and painfully.
