According to the story I read, she had told the writer of the screenplay for HBP that Dumbledore was gay because there was mention of a female love interest in the screenplay and she had to set them right. Having done that, she might as well have made it public, since it would have eventually come out anyway--she could control when and how it was done. So it mattered to her, for the integrity of the series, if not to us.
BTW, there is some inkling of this in DH, where Rita Skeeter talks about devoting a chapter in her book about Dumbledore to the Dumbledore/Harry relationship. This is not to say that there was anything improper--but that JKR did put out a hint.

I personally was slightly surprised, but it does make sense now that i think of it. But why should we care?
Obviously there are going to be a bunch of book burnings and protests against the books now by the HomoHaters, which is completely idiotic.
Dumbledore being gay has really nothing to do with the story line. The Harry Potter books are masterpieces, why is everyone getting so obsessed with the sexuality of a dead character?
*sigh*
I'm very happy you posted this, however. I enjoyed sharing my opinion on the very subject, as i am one of the many extreme HP fans. Though i don't care if Dumbledore was gay. I'm just happy the Ron and Hermione, and Harry and Ginny got married!

How can Dumbledore be gay? He doesn't exist. He's just an imaginary character in a fictional book.
But to answer your question, it doesn't really make any difference to the story, so why make an issue of it?

No of course not. I mean, does it change the character at all? Does it change Dumbledore? I wouldn't think so. Besides, how can you really tell? If I think about it, yeah in the 7th book there are references, but i have to REALLY think. Do you care? Because that's something you have to determine yourself

I'm not sure why J.K did this as she certainly doesn't need to worry about a "publicity stunt" to sell the books.
My guess is that the "announcement" is being taken out of it's original context. Honestly, this sounds like very typical British humour to me. Americans are probably making much more of this "announcement" than Europeons or anywhere else. Europeans and Brits most likely chuckled and went on about the day.
When I heard, I thought to myself, "good one!", shrugged my shoulders, and then winced at the thought about being inundated with the controversy on American television, radio and newspapers...... it's only the author's sense of humour and I think it's funny!

I absolutely love this news. I just love how accepting JK Rowling is, and I know it's ridiculous to feel so passionately about a fictional character, but this makes me love him even more.
Viva Dumbledore!

What? The old man from harry Potter? How so? In real life you mean or the character? Well, you said Dumbledore so I assume it's the character. You must be joking, not that I care but I think you're bluffing. And if you're not then well, that the character's business, ain't it?

You know, people DO care. HP fans care, it affects their opinion of a favorite character. parents care, it could affect the minds of their children. And gay people care, because I think Dumbledore has just become the most positive, coolest gay character in history.

I know it doesn't matter but...WHOA. I definitely did not see that one coming. I did wonder why he didn't have a woman friend (you know what I mean) unless you count McGonagal. I just thought he cared too much about his work and about others to be in a relationship. I am very disappointed though. I don't personally know any openly gay men (especially older ones) so it is harder to relate to him. You know what I'm saying.
But (lol) maybe that's why he was such good friends with Grindelwald. (just kidding)

I think my love for her grew more. She deliberately poked Laura Mallory and the rest of the haters.
But I'm still a bit weirded out. I always thought Dumbledore as not liknig anyone.
But I always thought of Remus or Sirius being outed out of the closet,
