If Grant was in charge, no doubt Bobby Lee would've had a helluva time crossing the Potomic. Many historians believe Meade's own army was too mangled to finish off the rebs, and considering that the Union commander moved cautiously anyway, many others have put the blame on Meade (even Abe)....permitting Lee to return safely to Virginia on July 13.

The only Union Corps that may have been in a position to pursue, would've been Slocum's XII Corps, posted on the Union estreme right. They had the least casualties and it was they who eventually led the pursuit of Lee's Army into Virginia.

Meade was in an extremely strong defensive position at Gettysburg. No commander would give up an advantage like that and go over to the offensive without knowing exactly what condition the enemy were in - Pickett and the other commanders in that attack were only a portion of the Confederate army; Lee knew he was beaten at that point, but Meade didn't know he had won.
