Everyone says after, and they are correct, but I would aerate instead of dethatching. Dethatching brings up weed seeds that have been lying dormant and in my opinion is injurious to most lawns. Some lawns do have too much thatch, but most lawns respond well to aeration, fertilization and some spot weed treatment in the fall,

dethatching is a real wast of time and energy plus as a person said it just brings up weed seeds putting down a good half inch of compose is a whole lot better you can fertilize before or after just use an organic fertilizer it will never burn and you will not get a chemical build up that will harden the soil over time

If you have to dethatch, lay off the high N fertilizer until you get a soils test.

You should not be power raking ( thatching) until early spring.Put down a fall fertilizer and thatch in the spring and then fertilize.
