I own my own building in a small town and want to start my own business, but I cant find any information on a search engine. I would like to start a movie rental store (there is not one in this town) and i really want to know if i have to buy the movies from a special place or can I just buy them from wal mart and rent them out?? What are the policies on this?? The only things I found when searching the web were buying into franchises and movie rental machines, but I dont want to do either, just a small town rental store with little overhead. Any info would be appretiated.

yeah i have to agree with everyone else. unless you are interested in doing it strickly as a hobby with no hope of ever making it into a profitable business, you are looking at a dying industry. in a few years, even companies like netflix will be gone because of advances in technology and download speeds. if i can download a movie off the internet in minutes, why would i want to sign in to my netflix account and then wait several days for my dvd to arrive. to say nothing of getting in my car and driving to the rental store. of course, not everybody is like that and if you live in a little town that has never had a movie rental store (kinda hard to believe) you may do ok for a few years.

this is what i would do. (you have to think of something that no one else has thought of yet). i would spend some money and fix the building up. turn it into a cafe/coffeeshop/movie theatre. in the back i would have a projector screen (kinda like those home theatre systems in peoples houses) then i would have a cafe that served outstanding coffee with a very cool atmosphere. like starbucks, but with good coffee. on weekends i would screen really cool old classic movies and charge people about $10.00 a ticket (group discounts) the real money would come from $4.76 lattes and $2.85 biscotti. think about it. college kids would be all over this. it would be like the VIP movie night. id pay 50 or 60 bucks to go out with my friends friday night and watch "scarface" in our own private theatre. good coffee. good company. you get the idea.

I wouldn't, too much competition. When directv and dish network came to everyone beyond the cable tv lines, a lot of movie rental stores went out of business. Now that movies can be downloaded and rented by mail through netflix there are more movie stores are closing. You mentioned buying them from Walmart to rent. That would be supporting another of your competitors. One more thing to check before starting this business, would you have to pay royalties to the owners of the movie copyrights?

Not sure on that but more the 1/2 of the movie rentals here are going out of business because Netflix is kicking their butt .
Netflix has thousands of titles and postage free back and forth shipping .

You could probably get them anywhere , but even the $5.50 bin could cost you more than you get in rental fees .

Even Blockbuster is copying Netflix to salvage the business .
