Like most childhoods, it was bittersweet. I only had one brother, but we had a ton of aunts and uncles and cousins.

Once a year, I think in February, all the families on my dad's side would come to our house to participate in something called the "Brothers' Bowling Tournament." It truly was a hoot to have that many family members gathered in a tiny house after the bowling was over. My favorite part was my dad and uncles playing cards, drinking beer, and reminiscing about their childhoods of the 20's and 30's and their experiences, mostly in the Pacific Theater, of WWII. It was fascinating and times were good, not a care in the world.

I don't ever recall anyone worrying about losing their jobs, going broke because of the cost of health care, and except for one family where my uncle was an elementary school principal and my aunt was a teacher at that school, none of the wives worked outside of the house because they had to to make ends meet. The times, the economy, were all different and most kids had a mom and a dad, who weren't perfect, but loved them unconditionally none-the-less.

Well, I guess we've come a long way since those days; but have we, have we really?

Yeah, I do. I have a lot of good memories from my childhood. Hmm...where to begin. Remember every Sunday I would go around the neighborhood and look for garage sales, usually looking for Super Nintendo games and some movies. When I was hanging out with my friends we would play War/Spy games. There were these two patches of garden in this field behind my house and we would throw fruit at each other from both gardens, and of course there was always one spy on either side. Remember going down to the corner store and getting a bag full of gummies, and jawbreakers. Usually that's where my weakly allowance went, one pound a week. Remember taking family trips to London, Cambridge, Thetford, Bury St. Edmunds, and some other places I can't remember....Don't have a single bad memory in England.

Yes - especially when I relate something to my grand children at story time - they love it as well, and sometimes ask very interesting questions and we browse the net sometimes to get the details and it is very much a loving occupation for all of us.

I just miss when you were a kid and you had NO responsibilities, other than chores and such. But at least you didn't haveta pay a huge mortgage, or keeping the lights on, car note, etc...
