f(2) = 2 x 4 - 8 - 1 = - 1
f(-1) = 2 x 1 - 4 (-1) - 1 = 2 + 4 - 1 = 5

f(2) means find the value of f(x) when x = 2:

f(2) = 2x2x2 - 4x2 - 1

=8 - 8 - 1

= -1.

f(-1) = 2 (-1)(-1)(-1) - 4(-1) - 1

= -2 + 4 -1

=1.
