Catholic priests are bound to secrecy in Confession. Acting as Christ's representatives (and being given the authority to loose and to bind), they can say whether one has truly given up their sin and merits Christ's forgiveness, or remains in their sin and hence does not. An unrepentant sinner (ie, "Father, I'm sleeping around with prostitutes and I intend to keep on doing it") will be told that they are not forgiven - and Scripture would uphold this. But the priest is enjoined not to tell the wife.

I agree with GF, and i made this point in another post. Maybe by saying that he felt deceived by the McCanns, the priest was trying to let the police know, that there was something that he was told in confiodence and that more investigation was needed.
Lets be fair though for a minute, if catholics senior priests can turn a blind eye to their kiddy fiddling priests, and they have been known for this here where i live with two priests, they are capable of covering up for murder.

If I 'WERE' a Catholic priest I think I would stand by all I have learned iin training and said on day of ordination which means I could not betray what is said in the confessional. Me as oridnary 'Joe Soap' would act differently but then I am not a priest!!!

A priest cannot repeat anything told him as part of a confession.
The Code of Canon Law states: The sacramental seal is inviolable; therefore it is absolutely forbidden for a confessor to betray in any way a penitent in words or in any manner and for any reason.
Violation of the seal of confession results in immediate excommunication of the priest.
Priests may discuss things in general terms. One priest said that hearing the confessions of second graders is like getting bombarded with cotton balls.
For more information, see the Code of Canon Law: http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P3G.HTM
With love in Christ.

A priest cannot tell what is said in Confession- EVER.
He would probably recommend the penitent turn themself in, but cannot require it of them.
If it really was an accident, then it isn;t murder.

If it was me I would tell but then that's easy for me to say since I haven't devoted my adult life to my religion and taken vows and such things. If I had perhaps it wouldn't be so easy for me to tell. It's impossible to say what you would do until you're actually in that situation.
