If you had a word problem that said something like:

If the ( can't remember what it is) Opening is 76 feet above sea level, and the closing is 314 feet below sea level. What is the total lengh( can't remember what the thing is)

What would be the answer, thanks

It is kind of like a number line. The two points on your number line will be 76 to -314.

so its length is the distance 76 is from 0 plus the distance from 0 to -314. It is written mathematically with absolute values:

|76| + |-314|
76+314 = 390
