hi mate
windows 98 isnt much different to windows xp in respect to basic updating drivers and hardware however in windows 98 days usb was only just appearing on p.c,s and this was usb1.1,so usb 2.0 is even more difficult but try this>
insert your mini cd into your drive and leave it there idle(if a flash screen appears just press exit)
now go to control panel and then to "add hardware wizard",now you need to run the wizard, however when you come to the section were the wizard asks you how you want to find the driver, you need to choose to locate it yourself
when the next screen appears you need to browse until you locate the cd/dvd drive were your mini cd is inserted
then press next and windows 98 will install the usb2.0 pcmcia card using only the files on the mini cd that it needs, then after this you may need to restart your laptop
this is a common mistake many p.c users make, just because a device comes with a cd/dvd they think you need to install everything thats on that disk
the easier method is to leave the disk in the drive and run the add hardware wizard and let windows take whichever files/data it needs to install the specific device, and this works with any p.c hardware/peripheral including printers, scanners and fax machines
the only other way to make your windows 98 laptop usb2.0 compliant is to upgrade to windows xp,however remember the minimum hardware requirments for windows xp are 233mhz processor,64mb ram(128mb recommended)and 4gb hard drive(windows 98 os is 122mb in size, including updates allow around 500mb)
apart from using add hardware wizard another easy way to install the usb2.0 pcmcia card is to insert it and then go to device manager and right click the specific device and select update driver, then use the same method as above
note:pcmcia cards come in two types of interface, these are 16bit(older) and the standard 32bit
unlike alot of devices these are both incompatible with each other,so a 16bit pcmcia card wont work with a 32bit card slot and visa versa, check the manual/documentation for specs
any problems let me know
good luck mate !

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Open the CD file and find the install icon and click on it and it will install the software for your USB port.
