Embedded Systems
Check out OS's like Minix or LeOS (linux embedded OS). They are showing up in planes and cars, in microwaves and mp3 players, in toys and games consoles, in security systems and military applications. Even in watches and jewelry and tshirts (really Im serious, its being done now).
Robotics and AI might be more fun. But they will be limited fields for a decade or so. Not alot of jobs. Embedded systems will provide the widest and most interesting range of things to get into for the next decade. Its beginning to seem that you could tie ES knowledge in with just about any hobby or interest you have.
