Women do have more equality.
Racism is not as big of a problem. . . depending on who you ask. And guess other would say that everyone has the "freedom" to do what they want. . . but I'm sure even that can be up for debate. LOL.

Good question!

1. The dogmatic grip of conservative tyranny has loosened. Here is an outstanding article which discusses this as it relates to the institution of art in our society:

2. Non-humanism is an exploitation paradigm in which brute force ("Might - Is - Right") is validation for discriminating "supremacy" over others, and that certain segments of society are not as valuable as lifeforms as other people are. Non-humanist tyrannies believe in slavery, the oppression of women and children, concentration camps, gas chambers, imperialism and invasion for plunder, as in Bush's war for oil. Non-humanism has loosened in the last century as evidenced by the humanism of Civil Rights, Women's Sufferage, Equal Rights, Worker's Rights, the Children's Bill of Rights, laws protecting homosexuals, Equal Opportunity, the U.N., the rise of democracy around the world, etc.
3. Economic globalization. All national economies of the world have become intricately entwined, which is a natural development but carries with it the fear of a centralization of power into the hands of a ruling oligarchy. Worries of a "New World Order" are based on realistic concerns.

4. Isolationism and Intolerance have begun to give way to Pluralism and Tolerance of cultural differences (language / race / customs / clothing / faiths / etc.) as the world becomes more connected, as evidenced by the growing tolerance for interacial - cross religious marriages, the end of Segregation, the rise of multi-ethnic communities, multi-lingualism as a social necessity, world trade, world travel, etc. Culturally, we are becoming a global "community" and are growing aware of the necessity to function as a connected unit, especially as related to issues such as global warming and pollution. For example, Western corporations have traditionally dumped their toxic wastes and located their more environmentally dangerous factories in underdeveloped nations "out of sight and out of mind" from their western customers. Now, western customers have learned to boycott such products and exploited people in underdeveloped lands are struggling to resist these plunder / non-humanist paradigms.
5. Medical advances: Longer lifespan, anti-biotics, vaccinations and the demise of smallpox, CPR, lower birth mortalities, genetics and the human genome illumination, stem cell, dental hygiene, nutritional illumination, ect.
