I understand where this soldier is coming from .. I too was a young soldier during Vietnam and did not understand the protests going on back home. But, My goal was to survive and go back to the World and here I am now several decades later and I still don,t understand war and why many of my friends had to die.. You see, there is no glory to war only misery..

There are way too many armchair quarterbacks in this war. I agree, when Iraq is that place the Sgt mentions where the aspirations of all humans are present. (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness) Tolerance will exist in the Middle East and the world will begin to know true peace. Not just a fake peace, where people are slaughtered but that never makes headlines. Where were Crosby and Nash when 100,000s of Iraqi Shiites and Kurds were being butchered while the rest of the world turned a blind eye? Humans need to look out for each.

wow that was heavy. I had two nephews in the war on terror one in the navy the other in the air force and neither one likes to talk about it much as they are both home now and out of the military. It is complicated to say the least the liberal democrats who are in power for the most part have since the beginning invested in defeat in the war in Iraq and the war on terror. Why? Because of their utter hatred of Bush. They are playing politics with it, anything to make Bush look bad even at the risk of putting our men and women further in harms way by being so negative. For this mind set I am ashamed that I was ever a part of the Democrat party. We have been attacked around the world along with other nations that believe in freedom of the individual for many years. If you goggle what Clinton said about Islamic fascists you will see that he didn't say anything different from Bush. The only difference was 9/11 and Bush decided to do something about it. Like it or not these Muslim extremists are at war with us, their goal to wipe all free thinking people from the planet by any and all means possible in the name of their moon god Allah. If we stay divided as a country we will loose this war on terror if we somehow unite no one can defeat us. But what will it take for some to put their petty political differences aside and defeat this enemy?? That is the 64 thousand dollar question. God bless our troops and thank you all for your service!!

I'd say everyone is entitled to their opinion -- especially someone with first-hand knowledge of the situation.
I'd say that his assessment of the psychological impact on our troops is fairly well described -- I have many close friends in Iraq right now, one on his second 15-month infantry tour there.
I'd say that his disdain for people who rant about things they don't understand is valid -- but I would extend it to both sides of the aisle -- to those who mindlessly support the quagmire as well as those who mindlessly rail against it. Either way, lack of thought and analysis are to blame for poor choices.
I disagree with his assessment that "We are the hope of the Iraqi people" -- because in the end, what we do there will not really matter -- other than the killings and the chaos -- because either Iraq will make itself safe and stable, or it won't -- and our presence is only dragging that out and possibly making it worse.
