I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 1420 with a Core 2 1.5 Ghz processor and 1 GB Ram. My computer was running fine out of the box, but it didn't come with any anti virus software only Windows Defender. I have Vista Basic and I have Spyware Doctor and AVG running in real time, now my memory is always over 65% sometimes 80%, while my processor rarely exceeds 12%. I thought 1 GB was more than enough with a fast processor!

Very cool. Thanks to everyone for answering my question so quickly. I am convinced that I need to upgrade my memory, but should I stick with Dell memory or is it safe to buy Crucial or Kingston, is there really much of a difference? I ask because my system is expandable to 4GB and I plan on doing just that, but Dell Memory is extremely expensive.

Use this link and run the Crucial scanner it will give you all the upgrade options for more memory i suggest a 2 gig kit , also uninstall that AVg and Spy ware doctor and buy Mcafee Virus Scan plus 2008 it work very well with Vista and has all the Virus protection and spy ware protection you need http://www.crucial.com/

You can NEVER have too much ram. Whoever says that you have enough is an idiot. The more you have the less hiccups your computer will have while running alot of programs for longer periods of time. Not to mention in most cases the more ram you have the faster you computer will be able to finish processing a request or a program.

Because you are simultaneously running an OS and programs the OS will keep its self in memory, and a hog like vista will take up a lot. You will still need more ram to keep programs running despite the amount of Processing

This is one of those questions that can have several answers. If you have run your spyware programs and determined nothing is wrong you should then check your Processes tab in Windows Task Manager. If there is to much stuff running, uninstall programs you don't use or disable the run on startup feature within the program itself.

It would depend on the applications you've loaded and are running, but you may have a virus that AVG isn't detecting, or spyware that Doctor doesn't detect. Try the online virus scan at www.trendmicro.com, and adaware (www.lavasoft.com) and/or spybot:search and destroy (www.download.com) for spyware. I use both just to be certain.

well since u are running vista, it pumps ur memory like crazy, try deactivating sum features, but it should be enugh
id prolly recommend like 1.5-2gigs for vista ultimate and stuff\
i usually got 54%-70% used and its okay
not vista, kind of an older comp with celeron d and 1 gig memory
so what can u do?:
1. deactive some vista features
2. ctrl+alt+del and see how many processes ur running, tell us
3. clean comp with utilities
4. memory optimization with utilities(free up memory)

Vista requires a minimum of 800MB of RAM - because you only have 1GB you have very little left for applications. Upgrade your RAM to 2GB - what a difference it will make.

Hello,
1 Gig of RAM is plenty, but more wouldn't hurt anything to upgrade.
Happy computing.
