What do you all think of the news J.K. Rowling revealed last night about Dumbledore? (I won't ruin the surprise by saying what it is, but I imagine most people know by now.) I was surprised, but at the same time, not totally shocked. When I read the news, the first thing I thought is "imagine all the nasty fanfiction and wikipedia vandalism..." What are everyone else's thoughts on the subject?

Angie H, did you realize that J.K. Rowling planned out the whole story before the books came out? It's not like she just makes this stuff up as she goes...

Ok, since there are people who don't know, Dumbledore is gay.

I wouldn't have guessed it myself but it hasn't altered my opinions on the character in any way. Personally, I think Dumbledore is J K Rowling's greatest creation, and this news is just something else I know about the character.

It doesn't bother me, it is now part of the Potter universe.
It doesn't seem to me that it really was something she wanted to disclose. According to the story I read, she had told the writer of the screenplay for HBP that Dumbledore was gay because there was mention of a female love interest in the screenplay and she had to set them right. Having done that, she might as well have made it public, since it would have eventually come out anyway--she could control when and how it was done.
BTW, there is some inkling of this in DH, where Rita Skeeter talks about devoting a chapter in her book about Dumbledore to the Dumbledore/Harry relationship. This is not to say that there was anything improper--but that JKR did put out a hint.

While it doesn't really impact the novels and people can easily over-look it if they want, I'm glad JKR has said this. It not only shuts up the folk who have been whinging she is bigoted for not including a gay character but also tries to drag the ignorant people who dislike gays into the twenty-first century.
To be honest, it's not a big deal. British books/film/TV shows have been depicting gay characters (including those aimed at teenagers) since the Eighties so why shouldn't HP follow suit and have a gay character too? That said, I imagine there will be some book burning among the religious fanatics tonight.

I was a bit surprised, but I still love the books and movies and think that this adds an extra piece to Dumbledores story!

Well, JK Rowling did not make the frontpage for a while and she was having a heart attack for that reason.
She wanted attention and that's why she said "Dumbledore is ___"
I think that this information might increase the sales for that book but reduce the quality to a large extent.

I think it's a sad little attempt on Rowling's part to get attention. Why would she all of a sudden say this about a children's book character? Pathetic.
In response to additional reply-She SAID she had it planned all along. I stand by my answer!
