4 models years back. So we're in the 2008 model year now. A "late model" vehicle would be 2004 to 2007 (with 2008 being the current model year). Anything older than 2004 us just a used car. The number 4 is used because a lot of manufacturers redo their cars after 4 model years.

RE:
What is a late model vehicle?
I am never sure if this term refers to a newer car or an older one.

Late model is newer. See it like this: You are late for class. You come in: an the teacher say you're late. Basically, you are the newest addition to the class.

"Late model vehicle" means a vehicle weighing 8,000 pounds or less, manufactured in the current model year or the 5 model years immediately preceding the current model year, or, if over 8,000 pounds, a vehicle manufactured in the current model year or the 15 model years immediately preceding the current model year.

well it is newer cars that are late models..
it all goes back to 1973..
at that time real horsepower was outlawed..
so for all intensive purposes the automobile was dead
the term late model was born..
race any late 60's car against any late 70's 80's or 90's car ..see who is late at the finish line..
