IF you are in a union you have to pay dues and you are subject to their rules. You must go by the contract they negotiate for you without having a say in it. Usually union jobs pay higher wages. Unions have many members and they will back you up in case of problems. They fight for you.

In non-union places you are on your own for asking for a raise and other benefits. You can make your personal beliefs known but you also have to take the deal you are offered or do without. You have no bargaining tools.
